Lyudao Airport was originally built in 1972 and put under the administration of Taiwan Garrison Command. Until 1977 it was rebuild with funds from both CAA and provincial government, and then its management was transferred to Taitung county government in 1984. Later on the airport was handed over to CAA in July in1990. In October 1995 CAA completed the airport expansion projects with runway, ramp, and airport terminal, control tower and dormitory all upgraded .
