Taitung (Fong Nien) Airport was once a holding room in the early age back in 1977, and upgraded to serve as an airport on July 1,1981. Months later it moved to the current site of Fon Nien for the sake of meeting the strategical requirement from the military, and began operating as a full civil aviation airport since then. On June 1, 2001 it was promoted to become a second class airport as Hualien. The same year in September the Taitung Airport immediately started its expansion construction in cooperation with the government policy to move industries east and the boosting of local tourist business.

The total floor area of the airport is 153.7 hectares with major facilities including runways, taxiways, aprons, airport terminal, maintenance hangar, fire station and terminal radar control. The airport is now operated and managed by CAA of Ministry of Communications and Transportation.

Ludao Airport was originally built in 1972 and put under the administration of Taiwan Garrison Command. Until 1977 it was rebuild with funds from both CAA and provincial government, and then its management was transferred to Taitung county government in 1984. Later on the airport was handed over to CAA in July in1990. In October 1995 CAA completed the airport expansion projects with runway, ramp, and airport terminal, control tower and dormitory all upgraded.

Ranked as the second largest off-island in Taiwan , Orchid Island is situated to southeast of Taiwan at about 50 knots away and was originally put under the administration of military. The total floor area of the airport is 43.74 square kilometers and it was first handed over to CAA in 1977, and its expansion projects for airport improvement was completed in 1982. Following the management of the Taitung county in 1984, CAA took over the management 1990 officially and since then initiated a series of development projects for furthur expansion and improvement.
